Justin’s Shorts – Should you dismiss a comment because it sounds outrageous?

October 6, 2011

Having arrived in the Lone Star state after a twelve hour drive (a feeble excuse for no post, I know), I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on a comment made by its Governor recently. Rick Perry, in presenting his case for the Republican Presidential nomination was quoted as saying Social Security was a “ponzi scheme“.

While I recognize the sensitivity of people to attacks on something with as much emotional attachment as Social Security, when the comment is “outrageous” or “inflammatory” it doesn’t mean the questions surrounding it aren’t worth asking. Surely, we should consider whether:

  1. The money is scheduled to run out at some stage
  2. There is some risk to future payments
  3. The system possibly needs updating, review or reassessment

You don’t have to be a fan of any of the Republican or Democratic politicians to ask whether their individual points may have some merit.
